Key Stage 4
(Years 10-11)

All students continue to study the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science, which provide the essential academic foundations required for most post-16 pathways. Science may be studied through Combined Science (Single Award) or Coordinated Sciences (Double Award) depending on students’ interests, ability and future aspirations.

Alongside these compulsory subjects, students typically select four option subjects from a broad range of GCSE, IGCSE, Btecs, vocational qualifications and other Level 1 / 2 qualifications. These may include subjects such as Art and Design, Geography, Computer Science, Physical Education, Marine Science, Design and Technology, Food and Nutrition, and a number of vocational courses including Hospitality and Catering, Construction Skills and Automotive Studies. This range of options ensures that students can follow either an academic or vocational pathway, or a combination of both. The options may vary year on year and are dependent on staffing. An options booklet will be produced each academic year detailing the options available for the following academic year.

In some cases, the number of option subjects may be reduced to ensure that the curriculum best supports a student’s individual learning needs, ability level or personal circumstances. This allows additional time and support to be provided in core subjects or for targeted learning programmes that help students achieve success and maintain a balanced and manageable workload.

In addition to subjects delivered within school, students may also have the opportunity to access distance or online learning courses in subjects such as Business Studies, Sociology or History. These options allow students to study subjects that may not always be available within the school timetable and support those wishing to pursue a specific qualification or career interest.

Throughout Key Stage 4, students continue to develop important skills including critical thinking, problem-solving, independent study and effective communication. Teaching and assessment are designed to support students in achieving their best in their examinations and coursework while also developing the resilience and study habits needed for future learning.

During Year 11, students participate in a structured programme of post-16 guidance and preparation, helping them to explore the different pathways available after completing their GCSE or equivalent qualifications. Students receive advice and guidance on a range of options including:

-
Academic pathways, such as studying AS and A Level courses
-
Vocational pathways, including technical and practical qualifications
-
Blended programmes, combining academic and vocational study
-
Employment and apprenticeship opportunities

This programme helps students make informed decisions about their future and ensures they leave Key Stage 4 prepared for the next stage of education, training or employment, equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to succeed.
