Inclusion & Support

Intervention

All students should be supported to achieve their full potential through the use of targeted, evidence-based interventions. Intervention is used to identify and address barriers to learning, helping students to make progress and maintain full access to the mainstream curriculum.

Interventions are carefully planned and informed by assessment data, teacher feedback and ongoing monitoring of student progress. They are designed to provide additional support where needed while ensuring that students remain engaged with their regular learning programme. Importantly, any pupil may access intervention at any point in their academic journey, depending on their individual needs, ensuring that support is responsive and flexible.

A range of interventions may be used across the school, including support in phonics, literacy, numeracy, subject-specific learning and catch-up programmes. These may take place through small group sessions, short-term targeted support or pre-teaching, where key concepts are introduced ahead of lessons to build confidence and understanding. Subject departments may also provide focused intervention sessions to reinforce key knowledge and skills in preparation for assessments and examinations.

Where possible, interventions are delivered in a way that minimises disruption to the core curriculum. Students will not be removed from core subjects where the intervention relates directly to that subject area, ensuring that they continue to receive high-quality classroom teaching alongside additional support.

Intervention programmes are regularly reviewed to ensure they are having a positive impact on student progress. Through this structured and supportive approach, intervention helps to ensure that all students are able to develop confidence, close gaps in learning and succeed within the mainstream curriculum.

Interventions that are accessible to all pupils are classed as Universal interventions e.g. subject-specific learning and catch-up programmes. Interventions that require an evidence-based programme e.g. Circle of Friends, precision teaching, Zones of Regulation are classed as Targeted interventions. Interventions that require specialist training e.g. ELSA, Social Stories, counselling, therapy (CAMHS, occupational therapy etc) are classed as Specialist interventions.
