Additional Educational Needs (AEN)
Our Ethos and Vision
We are committed to inclusion, equity, and high-quality education for all pupils. We recognise that pupils with Additional Educational Needs (AEN) are an integral part of our school community and that their needs must be anticipated, understood, and supported within all aspects of school life.
Rather than viewing AEN as a separate or isolated area of provision, the AEN policy and this handbook reflect a whole-school approach in which AEN is embedded across all policies, practices, and systems. This ensures that inclusion is not an add-on, but a fundamental principle that informs decision-making at every level from classroom teaching and curriculum design to safeguarding, behaviour, attendance, and wellbeing.
The AEN Team holds the ethos that every learner has the right to access meaningful education, achieve personal success, and feel valued within an inclusive community. We aim to remove barriers to learning by recognising individual strengths and needs, promoting independence, and supporting wellbeing.
We are working towards delivering a needs-led, inclusive education where every learner on St Helena thrives from early childhood through to adulthood. Driven by learner-centred planning, early intervention, and deep collaborative partnerships with families and professionals, we empower our children and young people to build the independence and resilience needed for a successful future.
Together with our community, we act as future-focused custodians of our youth's potential. We approach our mission with integrity, curiosity, responsibility, and optimism, ensuring each child achieves while firmly holding ourselves and each other to account.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)
At our schools, we are committed to providing an inclusive, equitable, and welcoming learning environment for every child. Although our schools currently has no pupils identified as using English as an Additional Language (EAL), we recognise that linguistic and cultural diversity enriches our entire school community.
