EAL Statement
1. Statement of Intent & Context
At our schools, we are committed to providing an inclusive, equitable, and welcoming learning environment for every child. Although our schools currently has no pupils identified as using English as an Additional Language (EAL), we recognise that linguistic and cultural diversity enriches our entire school community.
This statement outlines our proactive commitment to readiness, ensuring that effective systems, adaptive teaching approaches, and welcoming procedures are established so that any future EAL learners and their families are fully supported from day one.
2. Key Aims
● Equal Access:
Ensure that all pupils, regardless of language background or ethnicity, enjoy equal access to a broad,
balanced, and ambitious curriculum.
● Readiness:
Maintain robust intake and assessment procedures to swiftly identify and support the needs of any new EAL pupils.
● Inclusive Culture:
Foster a school environment where all languages, cultures, and identities are valued, respected, and celebrated.
● Language Acquisition & Development:
Support EAL learners in developing confidence and competence in English across the curriculum while valuing their home language(s).
● Home-School Partnership:
Build strong, communicative partnerships with parents and carers to ensure families feel genuinely included in the schools community.
3. Admissions & Intake Procedures
Should an EAL pupil enroll at our schools, we will follow a structured intake process:
1. Data Collection:
Collect comprehensive information regarding home language(s), prior schooling, and language history during the admissions process.
2. Welcoming & Orientation:
Conduct a sensitive, welcoming induction for the pupil and their family, utilizing translation or visual resources where appropriate.
3. Initial Assessment:
The class teacher and AEN/Inclusion team will conduct an initial baseline assessment of English language proficiency (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) to determine appropriate support levels.
4. Classroom Support & Adaptive Teaching
Teaching at our schools is responsive to individual needs. When supporting EAL learners, teachers will employ evidence-based, adaptive classroom strategies, including:
● Visual & Contextual Scaffolding:
Using visual aids, graphic organisers, realia, substitution tables, and word banks to support understanding.
● Explicit Instruction:
Providing clear explanations, modelling key vocabulary, and using consistent instructional language.
● Peer & Group Support:
Utilising flexible grouping and paired work to encourage collaborative learning and spoken language models.
● Valuing Home Languages:
Encouraging the continued use of home languages to support cognitive understanding and concepts prior to English output.
5. Assessment, Tracking & Support
● EAL support aligns with our school's broader inclusion and Additional Educational Needs (AEN) framework using the Assess, Plan, Do, Review (APDR) cycle.
● Progress in English language proficiency and academic subjects will be reviewed regularly.
● If an EAL pupil requires additional targeted support, appropriate classroom adaptation plans or intervention strategies will be put in place in consultation with parents.
6. Staff Professional Development
● The schools leadership teams will ensure staff have access to relevant training and resources on EAL pedagogy, vocabulary instruction, and inclusive classroom practices.
● Staff capacity will be continually developed so the schools remain ready to respond flexibly to changing student demographics.
