(Years 7-9)

Students study a wide range of subjects including English, Mathematics, Science, ICT/Computer Science, History, Geography, Religious Education, Physical Education, Art, Music, Design and Technology, Food and Nutrition and PSHE. This range of subjects ensures that students develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to progress successfully through secondary education.

A continued focus is placed on developing literacy and numeracy skills, as these are essential for learning across the curriculum and future success. Students are encouraged to actively engage in their learning by asking questions, thinking critically and developing confidence in expressing their ideas. Regular assessment supports teachers in monitoring progress and identifying where additional support may be needed.

To further support reading development, students have access to the Accelerated Reader programme, which encourages regular independent reading and helps to develop reading fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. The programme is based on principles from the science of reading, recognising that frequent reading practice, matched to a student’s reading level, strengthens decoding skills, builds background knowledge and improves comprehension over time. By selecting books appropriate to their ability and completing quizzes to check understanding, students are motivated to read widely and develop a sustained interest in reading.

Key Stage 3 also promotes personal development and wellbeing through PSHE, assemblies and enrichment opportunities. These experiences help students develop important life skills such as teamwork, resilience, responsibility and respect for others.

During Year 9, students take part in a careers education and subject options process designed to support them in making informed choices for Key Stage 4. Through guidance from teachers, careers discussions and information events, students explore their interests, strengths and future aspirations before selecting their option subjects for Year 10. This process helps ensure that students choose pathways that best support their learning, interests and future opportunities.

By the end of Key Stage 3, students will have developed the knowledge, study skills and independence required to transition successfully into Key Stage 4 and the next stage of their educational journey.
