Key Stage 1
(Years 1-2)

A key focus in Key Stage 1 is the development of early reading through systematic phonics teaching. Daily phonics lessons support pupils in recognising sounds, blending and segmenting words, enabling them to decode and read with increasing fluency and confidence. Regular reading opportunities both in school and at home help children develop comprehension, vocabulary and a lifelong enjoyment of books.

Teaching is designed to be engaging, inclusive and appropriately challenging, with opportunities for pupils to work independently, in pairs and in groups. Through a range of practical and cross-curricular learning experiences, the Key Stage 1 curriculum supports children to become confident learners with secure foundations in reading, phonics and numeracy, preparing them successfully for Key Stage 2.
