Curriculum Plans

The Key stage 1 curriculum consists of: English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, Music, Art, Religious Education (RE), Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Circuit, Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) and Physical Education.

PSHCE is taught to all pupils.  Provision is made for pupils (at the request of the parents) to be exempted from any particular topic that may be of a sensitive/personal nature.

RE is a compulsory subject.  Exemption from RE lessons will have to be requested in writing to the Headteacher.

PE / games practises may take place at SHSS for pupils as the need arises.  Children in KS1, undertake swimming lessons throughout the school year (weather permitting).   If for any reason, your child needs to be excused, the Class Teacher needs to be informed by the parent.

Home Learning / Support

All pupils have a homework diary in which homework details and the date by which it is to be completed are recorded.  At the end of each week parents should sign the diary to inform teachers that they have seen the child’s homework.  We would like to encourage parents to monitor and sign the diaries and to make any necessary comments.  It may also be used as a home-to-school book that provides liaison between parents and the school.  Pupils are encouraged to also include personal/notes/dates/reminders etc.

PSHE/Careers/RSE

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education, including Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Careers Education, forms an important part of the wider curriculum across the school.

The programme is designed to support students’ personal development, wellbeing and preparation for life beyond school. The curriculum is carefully sequenced across all year groups to ensure that key knowledge and skills are revisited and developed in an age-appropriate way.

The PSHE curriculum is informed by the PSHE Association framework, alongside careers resources from Unifrog, ensuring that teaching reflects current best practice and provides students with relevant and meaningful learning experiences. Lessons explore topics such as wellbeing, relationships, personal safety, citizenship, financial awareness and career planning, helping students to develop the knowledge and confidence needed to make informed choices about their lives.

Careers education is embedded across the curriculum and supported through structured guidance and opportunities for students to explore future pathways. This includes discussions about careers within subject areas, exposure to employers and guest speakers, and the use of Unifrog to research courses, careers and progression routes.

  • Key Stage 1 (Years 1–2) - Pupils begin to develop an understanding of themselves, their relationships with others and the world around them. Learning focuses on friendships, kindness, personal wellbeing, basic safety and an early awareness of different jobs and roles in the community.
