Home Learning /Support
St Helena Secondary School aims to support all students to achieve their potential. We offer an inclusive education for all students and those with special additional needs are able to benefit from the help of a Teacher Assistant.
Our Head of Learning Support and the dedicated team of Teacher Assistants provide specific support to enable students with particular learning needs to make expected levels of progress.

Homework and independent Study is regularly set in all subject areas. Homework and independent Study help to build your child’s ability to show self-reliance and self-motivation. The learning tasks that are set will play an important part in promoting your child’s progress.
Homework and independent Study may take a variety of forms and, as your child moves through school, the amount of homework and independent Study will increase. However, the work set will always be within your child’s capability. Students can expect a minimum of 30 mins per week for English (plus reading), Maths (plus number work) and Science. All other subjects are 30 mins every two weeks (however, the scope is there for homework to be given every week if necessary).
Your child will be issued with a school planner at the beginning of each school year. Students are expected to record their homework and independent study work in their school planner: Efficient organisation is a key to becoming a successful learner.
Please encourage your child to organise their time and ensure they complete their homework and independent Study to the best of their ability. Parents and carers are asked to ensure that their child has a quiet area, with a table and chair, at which they can study.
Please contact your child’s Form Tutor if you have any concerns about homework and independent study.
Work Related Learning
Work Related Learning (WRL) provides students with valuable opportunities to develop an understanding of the world of work, build employability skills and explore potential career pathways. Through meaningful engagement with employers and workplace experiences, students can apply their learning in real-life contexts and develop skills such as communication, teamwork, responsibility and problem-solving.

This section sets out the arrangements for Work Related Learning within the school and ensures that all placements are organised in a safe, structured and educationally meaningful way.

Work Related Learning opportunities are available to students from Year 10 onwards, ensuring that students are sufficiently mature to benefit from workplace experiences and understand their responsibilities within a professional environment.

Criteria for accessing work related learning

Work Related Learning opportunities are available to pupils from Year 10 onwards. Participation is intended to support pupils in developing employability skills, gaining experience of the workplace and exploring potential career pathways.

Access to work placements may be determined using the following criteria:

-
Pupil interest and career aspirations related to the placement opportunity.
-
Academic ability or subject suitability, where specific knowledge or skills may be required for certain placements.
-
Readiness and maturity to represent the school appropriately in a professional environment.
-
Attendance and conduct record, demonstrating reliability and responsibility.

The school aims to ensure that Work Related Learning opportunities are accessible to a wide range of pupils, recognising that workplace experiences can motivate pupils and support future career planning. Where the number of placements available is limited, the school may prioritise pupils using the criteria above while ensuring that fair and equitable access is maintained over time.

All pupils participating in Work Related Learning are expected to demonstrate a positive attitude, willingness to learn and commitment to workplace expectations.

PSHE/Careers/RSE
Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education, including Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Careers Education, forms an important part of the wider curriculum across the school. The programme is designed to support students’ personal development, wellbeing and preparation for life beyond school. The curriculum is carefully sequenced across all year groups to ensure that key knowledge and skills are revisited and developed in an age-appropriate way.

The PSHE curriculum is informed by the PSHE Association framework, alongside careers resources from Unifrog, ensuring that teaching reflects current best practice and provides students with relevant and meaningful learning experiences. Lessons explore topics such as wellbeing, relationships, personal safety, citizenship, financial awareness and career planning, helping students to develop the knowledge and confidence needed to make informed choices about their lives.

Careers education is embedded across the curriculum and supported through structured guidance and opportunities for students to explore future pathways. This includes discussions about careers within subject areas, exposure to employers and guest speakers, and the use of Unifrog to research courses, careers and progression routes.

-
Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11) - Students focus on preparation for life beyond school, including managing relationships, personal wellbeing, financial awareness and independence. Careers education supports students in exploring post-16 pathways, including academic, vocational and employment routes.
