Home Learning / Support
St Helena Secondary School aims to support all students to achieve their potential. We offer an inclusive education for all students and those with special additional needs are able to benefit from the help of a Teacher Assistant.
Our Head of Learning Support and the dedicated team of Teacher Assistants provide specific support to enable students with particular learning needs to make expected levels of progress.

Homework and independent Study is regularly set in all subject areas. Homework and independent Study help to build your child’s ability to show self-reliance and self-motivation. The learning tasks that are set will play an important part in promoting your child’s progress.
Homework and independent Study may take a variety of forms and, as your child moves through school, the amount of homework and independent Study will increase. However, the work set will always be within your child’s capability. Students can expect a minimum of 30 mins per week for English (plus reading), Maths (plus number work) and Science. All other subjects are 30 mins every two weeks (however, the scope is there for homework to be given every week if necessary).
Your child will be issued with a school planner at the beginning of each school year. Students are expected to record their homework and independent study work in their school planner: Efficient organisation is a key to becoming a successful learner.
Please encourage your child to organise their time and ensure they complete their homework and independent Study to the best of their ability. Parents and carers are asked to ensure that their child has a quiet area, with a table and chair, at which they can study.
Please contact your child’s Form Tutor if you have any concerns about homework and independent study.

Options Information:
PSHE/Careers/ RSE
Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education, including Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Careers Education, forms an important part of the wider curriculum across the school. The programme is designed to support students’ personal development, wellbeing and preparation for life beyond school. The curriculum is carefully sequenced across all year groups to ensure that key knowledge and skills are revisited and developed in an age-appropriate way.

The PSHE curriculum is informed by the PSHE Association framework, alongside careers resources from Unifrog, ensuring that teaching reflects current best practice and provides students with relevant and meaningful learning experiences. Lessons explore topics such as wellbeing,
relationships, personal safety, citizenship, financial awareness and career planning, helping students to develop the knowledge and confidence needed to make informed choices about their lives.

Careers education is embedded across the curriculum and supported through structured guidance and opportunities for students to explore future pathways. This includes discussions about careers within subject areas, exposure to employers and guest speakers, and the use of Unifrog to research courses, careers and progression routes.

-
Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9) - Students develop a deeper understanding of personal wellbeing, relationships, identity, citizenship and decision-making. Careers education becomes more structured, with students exploring interests, skills and potential career pathways. In Year 9, careers guidance supports the Key Stage 4 options process, helping students choose subjects that align with their interests and future aspirations.
