Alternative
Curriculum Pathways

There may be circumstances where pupils experience significant barriers to learning within the mainstream classroom due to additional educational needs (AEN). These fall under 4 areas:

  1. Cognition and Learning (C and L);

  2. Communication and Interaction (C and I);

  3. Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) and

  4. Physical and Sensory needs (P and S).

In these circumstances, an alternative pathway may be provided to ensure that pupils continue to access meaningful education, develop essential life skills and remain engaged in learning. Alternative pathways are designed to support pupils whose needs cannot currently be met through the standard curriculum and classroom environment.

The purpose of an alternative pathway is to provide targeted support and personalised learning opportunities, while maintaining the long-term aim of enabling pupils to access the mainstream curriculum wherever possible.

Alternative pathways are guided by the following principles:

  • All pupils have the right to an education that meets their individual needs.

  • Support should be provided as early as possible when barriers to learning are identified.

  • Learning programmes will be tailored to the needs, abilities and circumstances of each pupil.

  • Alternative provision should support reintegration into mainstream education where possible.

  • The wellbeing and safety of pupils remain a priority at all times.

  • The school will work with families and external agencies to support pupils effectively.
